Let’s talk about your car, truck, crossover, or SUV’s fuel system and the primary parts that make up this critical “bloodline” in your automobile.

Gas Tank

Your vehicle’s gas tank is the reservoir for the gasoline. It holds however many gallons of gasoline its capacity allows. Located inside the tank is an electronic “trigger” that sends the information to your fuel gauge so you know exactly how much gas is left in your tank. It’s important for your fuel pump and your engine to keep your gas tank at least one-quarter full at all times.

Fuel Pump

If you drive a newer car, your fuel pump is electric. If you drive an older car, your fuel pump may be a mechanical pump. The fuel pump is the auto part that draws the gasoline out of the tank and pushes it into your combustion engine. Without the fuel pump, the gas would not get to the engine and you would not be able to start and run your automobile.

Fuel Filter

One of the most important parts of the fuel system is the fuel filter. It filters sediment out of the gasoline before it is drawn into the pump and after it is pushed out of the pump. Dirt and sediment can seriously damage your combustion chamber, especially if it makes its way into the cylinders. The fuel filter purifies the fuel before it is pushed into the engine.

Fuel Injectors

Newer automobiles have fuel injectors. Depending on your car’s set-up, you might have fuel injection that pushes the fuel into an intake manifold or direct fuel injection that pushes the fuel into the cylinders. The fuel injectors use special nozzles to ensure the right amount of gas makes its way into the combustion chamber for ignition with air.

Carburetor

If you drive an older car, you might have a carburetor. This part has been replaced by the fuel injectors in modern automotive engineering. The carburetor mixes the air and fuel before it’s delivered to the combustion chamber. This is why carburetor adjustments are necessary in older automobiles to make sure the fuel mix isn’t too lean or too rich.

There you have it. Those are the main parts of your vehicle’s fuel system. CAR FIX Cookeville is the best auto shop in Cookeville, TN, and we’d be happy to make sure that your fuel system is always in the best shape possible.
