Will My Car’s Battery Warn Me Before It Dies?

We hate to say it here at CAR FIX in Cookeville but your battery may or may not give you any warning before it dies. Below, we are going to list the signs that your battery needs to be replaced, but perhaps the best indicator is its age. A vehicle battery will last three to four years. If your car battery is this old and you experience any of the following problems, bring your vehicle to our shop.

Battery Warning Light

Sometimes, you will receive a dashboard warning that the battery is going bad. Naturally, the light that illuminates on the dashboard is going to be the battery light. This light is in the shape of a battery. It will turn on if the battery is going bad or if the alternator is going bad.

Corroded Battery Terminals

If you pop the hood and take a look at the battery and see that the terminals are corroded, your battery needs to be replaced because it is leaking sulfuric acid. This is the acid found inside the battery that works with the metal plates to form the chemical reaction that creates power.

Difficult/Slow Starts

Another sign that it’s time to replace your car battery is difficulty starting your automobile. If your vehicle cranks more than normal before the engine fires up, this problem points directly to the battery. We recommend that you head straight to our shop rather than run the risk of ending up with a dead battery the next time you try to start your automobile.

Light/Accessory Malfunction

If you are also starting to have problems with your vehicle’s lights and accessories, it’s possible that the battery is not generating enough power to power them. The lights may be dim and the accessories may malfunction. For example, you may not be able to get your car radio to turn on.

Problems With the Battery Case

If you decide to inspect your battery, another thing to look for is a misshapen battery case. In other words, the case will be warped, bubbling, or cracked. This is an indication that there is an issue with the interior chemical reaction. You definitely want to get a new battery.

Rotten Engine Odors

You also want to get a new battery if you smell rotten eggs around the battery. This points to a battery leak. Again, the acid inside the battery is sulfuric acid and it smells like rotten eggs.
